Five DevSecOps controls to start with and keep shipping: secrets, least privilege and MFA, CI scanning, IaC checks and security alerting.
Security as a bottleneck, or as controls in the pipeline
Many teams treat security as a final review that delays releases. DevSecOps moves it into the pipeline: small, automated, repeatable checks.
You do not need an expensive tool to begin; you need to begin with the most likely risks.
1. Keep secrets out of code
Keys in repositories, committed .env files or variables shared over chat are a common source of incidents.
First step: a secrets manager from your cloud provider (for example AWS Secrets Manager or Azure Key Vault) or an equivalent, rotation, and a secret scanner in pre-commit or CI. If a key was ever exposed, rotate it even if it is deleted from history.
2. Least privilege and MFA
Review who has administrator access and why. Enforce MFA on every human account, use short-lived roles instead of long-lived keys and remove inactive users.
To review the posture of the cloud account itself (accounts, networks, storage), see our cloud security review.
3. Dependencies and images
Add a vulnerability scanner to CI and set a threshold, for example blocking only critical severity with a fix available. A scanner that blocks everything ends up switched off.
4. Infrastructure as code
Review Terraform, Bicep or CloudFormation in pull requests and run a static analyser over it to catch public buckets, open ports or missing encryption.
5. Logging and alerts
Turn on the provider's audit logs and alert on what matters: administrator access, policy changes and root account use.
How to roll them out without blocking
Start in warn mode for a few weeks, measure the noise, fix false positives and tighten with your team's agreement.
What you do not need at the start
Your own SOC, certifications or dozens of tools. Basic hygiene and evidence first.
